Dental Implants Abroad?

We have all seen the websites offering this procedure abroad at incredibly low prices in comparison to what is on offer in Ireland or the UK for that matter. When you go to see your local dentist and mention that you are thinking of having this surgery abroad automatically your dentist is negative to the idea.

Are dental implants abroad a safe option?

There is no correct answer to the question! The answer is you are having surgery so you want to be sure that your dentist is competent in providing this surgery as you would if you were having any other surgery.
You have to think of the cost implications of having treatment abroad when you decide to move ahead with dental implants. Yes, there is the headline price which shows a massive saving but is it really that big? When you have a dental implant placed, any professional dentist will want the patient around for up to 7 days after the operation to check for infection, manage the swelling and make sure the patient is suffering no discomfort. You will also need to return 4-6 months later to have the porcelain crowns placed on top of the dental implants.

So let’s look at the real costing:

Trip 1 – For part one of the treatment

  • Return flight to the clinic abroad
  • 5 nights at a 4* hotel in city of the clinic
  • Spending money
  • Cost of procedure abroad
  • Time off from work
  • Cost for one dental implant abroad
  • €200
  • €300
  • €200
  • €350
  • €300
  • €1350.00

You might have multiples of the procedure done so consider the patient is having 3 placements. This would bring the price to an average €700.00 per placement. This looks good so far. See trip 2!

Trip 2 – for placement of porcelain crowns

  • Return flight to the clinic
  • 5 nights at a 4* hotel in city of the clinic
  • Spending money
  • Porcelain Crown
  • Time off from work
  • REAL Cost for one porcelain crown
  • €200
  • €300
  • €200
  • €150
  • €300
  • €1150.00

Example:

Let’s consider the patient has 3 implants with 3 porcelain crowns the price then average’s out to €475.00 per porcelain crown.

So now we can see that having 3 complete rehabilitations works out to be €1175.00 for each tooth completely restored.

So there is a big saving with the price of each unit being nearly 50% cheaper than having the dental work done by a dental implant professional in Ireland.

What happens if I have problems with my new teeth?

This is where it gets very tricky. No dentist in Ireland will consider working on these items that are placed abroad and you will have to fly back to the clinic you had the dental procedure done. This is a very important factor when you are considering having dental surgery abroad.

So what do I do?

abroad-dentistDr Luana O’Connor is a leading dental professional based in Romania with her clinic HappyDental. Dr O’Connor has undergone 3 years of post graduate training and has been awarded her Masters in Implantology.
Dr O’Connor says ‘Having surery abroad is an attractive option for a lot of patients but personally I am against the whole dental tourism idea. The reason for this is that patients come to us with unrealistic ideas about what can be done in small time periods. Yes, this particular procedure abroad can be cheaper but patients must take into consideration that they are having surgery done by a dentist and they will need suitable recovery times both after the surgery and between dental operations.’

Dr O’Connor has plans to help patients who want affordable dental implants without the risk of travelling abroad for the procedure. Dr O’Connor says ‘Due to the amount of requests for this particular dental procedure we are receiving we have decided to open a dental clinic in Ireland in 2014 for patients who want affordable dental work. I will be working in Ireland with patients who want to have the surgery done. We will not be encouraging patients to travel abroad. I will examine, diagnose and provide the dental procedure myself. All follow up concerns for patients will be handled in our dental clinic in Ireland.’

How much will the whole procedure cost me in Ireland? Will there be a payment plan?

The price will be €1249.00 for the complete treatment. With no overseas travel, no time off work and an Irish Dental Council dentist providing the dental work in Ireland.
As this is a large investment for people we are working on a payment plan to make the whole thing easier for patients to achieve.
